Still love the proportions, and I could live with the surfacing on the flanks, even if I’m not a fan. Neat way to make the flame surfacing into functional vents on the go-faster version (GTA, Quadrifoglio Verde?), though.

That face, though. I guess they wanted to make it distinctive.

Interior is neat

At any rate, I guess they got one happy/angry customer

Wait... are we sure this is the real deal, not just another render?

Because if these are real, I’m pretty disappointed. I mean, the car looked pretty good on the two leaked pics, but this front... ugh.

Not sure about the front eyes, but maybe I’ll get used to it...in time.

The dramatic depreciation on Alfas means I could probably own one of these in a couple years. Looks awesome.

Not for sure: they’re all computer renders, but they do tally very closely with the potato cam pictures that leaked yesterday.

I can’t say I’m taken by the front either, but maybe it needs a little time. Some of the best designs need to grow on you...

One stalwart in my regular autotrader/ebay rounds: the original 156. One day it might just pull the trigger.

An early to mid 2000s Alfa was on my list of “want but insurance says no” cars.

I had a dream about one of these last night thanks to these pics. Apparently I’m a showoff and was nearly arrested... oops.

I like everything but the face. I can’t help but think they could solve all that by moving the projectors in the headlights in a couple of inches. Not the headlights themselves, but just the circular projectors within them.

I’d photochop it, but I have neither the skills nor the time...

Do it. I’ve got a 156 2.5l V6 that I daily drove for a number of years. Very few problems (only one was a MAF sensor that’s also standard fitment on similar age BMWs, so you can hardly blame Alfa for that part’s reliability).

Utterly fantastic car. Handles slightly worse than an E36, but that’s more than made up for by the drama, eagerness and noise of the drivetrain. Really an absolute peach.

Actually, sod that. All it needs is an extra set of smaller projectors inside the big ones. It’d hark back to the quad headlamp 2000 GTVs as well...

I think it’s a matter of a very delicate balance of proportions. I think they have the headlights about right, but the scudetto is too large. Compare the original Giulietta 750/101 with the current one:

Kinja'd!!!

Same motif, but the smaller headlights and slimmer scudetto and whiskers of the original look fantastic, while the bigger features on the modern Giulietta make it look like an over-inflated budgie.

I thought it might be the new Giulia’s lines in the bonnet that lead to the scudetto that’s the problem, but I don’t think it is. Compare the pre- and post-facelift versions of the 916 series GTV:

Kinja'd!!!

Small scudetto and whiskers, delicate proportions, gorgeous.

Kinja'd!!!

Big scudetto and whiskers, proportions gone to pot, fcking ugly.

But both have the strong bonnet lines.

That does look remarkably different, especially with the GTV. I think the swept-back looks of modern front ends doesn’t help the gormless look. Just look at the 1st and 2nd generation 1-series.

Actually, I wonder what concave instead of convex lines on the two lower edges of the scudetto would look like. Things like that tend to visually slim things down...

In that it’s a slightly less angry bird: yes. But I have to say as someone who generally doesn’t like the pointless drama of M-Sport versions and the like, it does look remarkably well integrated and functional.

I can live with the triangle when it’s just a part of the grille design, like this modern one:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Or this classic:

But when it’s the primary design element of the front end, it reminds me of this:

Yuck.

ETA: it seems my Kinja formatting skills suck, much like this Mercury sucking a lemon.

I completely agree with your angry birds assesment. I think the headlights are what really kill the front end design. The sides and rear of the car do look good though.
